Addressed primarily to library educators and to public librarians who have responsibility for disseminating general information to the public, this paper proposes to make a link between the absence of general lifelong learning about Pacific Rim countries among the general public, and the congruent requirement which that absence implies for the training of library professionals. The Pacific Rim includes the more than 30 nations that border the Pacific including Latin America, the United States, Canada, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, many Asian nations, Australia, and the Pacific islands. Issues related to international or transborder flow of information as related to technological and political problems and constraints on governments and the private sector are important, but the focus of this paper is on a simpler task: determining how ordinary individuals in all Pacific Rim countries may become better informed in general terms about each other. It is suggested that public librarians (and library schools which educate future staff members) should: develop broader general collection development policies; seize opportunities to develop collaboration between international and regional groups outside the library profession (e.g., the Pacific Telecommunications Council and the Pacific Alliance for Educators); seek sponsorship for an increase in international internships; identify and use others' systems and programs that are appropriate for specific populations; and regularize gift exchanges and technological sharing.
