The Nature-Computer Camp. Final Evaluation Report, 1984-1985. E.C.I.A. Chapter 2.
District of Columbia Public Schools, Washington, DC. Div. of Quality Assurance.
This report presents a description and evaluation of the Nature-Computer Camp (NCC), an environmental and computer science program designed for sixth grade students in the District of Columbia public schools. Inputs, processes and outcomes based on a Planning, Monitoring and Implementing (PMI) Evaluation Model are reviewed for each of the four program objectives. These achieved objectives included: (1) the establishment of the Nature-Computer Camp; (2) significant gains in knowledge in the areas of stream ecology, woodland ecology and geology, and computer literacy; (3) positive attitudes toward the program; and (4) demonstration of appropriate socialization skills. Evaluative results indicated that the goal of the project to provide students with an opportunity to develop socio-academic skills emphasizing environmental inter-dependencies and computer literacy was met. With over 450 students demonstrating gains in all areas, no changes were recommended for either the program or the evaluation design. The only recommendation suggested would be for continuance as is or expansion if possible. Supporting documentation (including evaluation model schema, data analysis summaries, camp schedules, and samples of expected social behaviors) is included in appendices. (ML)
