The Office of Civil Rights (OCR) recently clarified that schools are required to provide students with disabilities (SWD) equal opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities (U.S. Department of Education [USDE] Office for Civil Rights, 2013). Schools have flexibility to design and expand extracurricular opportunities based on existing programs and resources. Because some SWDs will not qualify for or choose not to participate in interscholastic sports, even with appropriate accommodations, OCR recommends alternative extracurricular options. One such option might be participation within an existing outdoor pursuits or adventure program. This article promotes the development of alternative activities to sport to include active participation in outdoor pursuits and provides links to national outdoor pursuit programs (see Table 1). Here Part V of the feature profiles an alternative program for outdoor adventures or sport clubs to help schools consider other means of addressing the Office of Civil Rights guidance in the Dear Colleague Letter.
