What Works: Air Pollution Solutions. Report No. 1.
Malaspina, Mark; And Others
This report profiles 69 initiatives and programs from across the country that are effectively reducing smog, air toxics, and chemicals that destroy the ozone layer. Problem solving strategies range from community pressure forcing reduction of industrial emissions, to municipal governments promoting transportation alternatives, to adoption of tough local pollution control laws. Each of the efforts is cited as having achieved dramatic and long lasting results. The report also provides a brief overview of the air pollution issues addressed, and explains major deadlines and opportunities for activists under the 1990 amendments to the Federal Clean Air Act. Chapter 7 (p85-94) is entitled "Air Pollution Education" and deals with both hands-on activities and curriculum development. Contact information is provided for each of the stories presented, and a resource section provides information on an additional 53 air pollution organizations. (MCO)
