Information is given about the family centers on birth rates, nuclear versus extended families, substitute parents and parental roles. Working mothers in Africa, women in Latin America, women in Europe, women's liberation and child care are discussed in the section on women. Society is discussed in terms of diseases of technologically advanced societies, play facilities and migrant experiences. Health concerns include the insensitivity of professionals, irrelevance of medicine in the Third World, self care, and primary health care. The notes on educational issues focus on the role of the professionals, preschooling, parent involvement, and the gifted and handicapped. Concluding notes are concerned with children's rights, child abuse, and the relationship between the state and the family. (Author/RH)
