This Haida-English dictionary introduces the Alaskan Haida alphabet and gives Haida words with English translation and the English equivalent pronunciation. The first half of the dictionary is an introduction to the sound system and grammar of Haida. Short discussions of the following topics are included: vowels; consonants; semivowels; rounded consonants; syllable final aspirated/unaspirated stops; interchange of plain and aspirated stops; neutralization of short vowels; short vowels before semivowels; relationship of "i" and "u" to "y" and "w"; contraction of "yi" and "wu"; the weak glottal stop; word-initial glottal stop and "h"; neutralization of "ng" and "n"; neutralization of "l" and "dl"; double consonants; vowel shortening; Tlingit borrowings in Alaskan Haida; tone; word boundaries based on tone; dialect differences; how to use the dictionary; word categories; nominals; verbs; numerals; enclitics; pronouns; and demonstratives. The second half of the book includes the Haida-English dictionary with example sentences, and an English-Haida index.
