Mai-Anh Le Tran is Associate Professor of Christian Education at Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, and is president of the Religious Education Association. Here she begins with a saying attributed to Hindu mystic and guru Sri Ramakrishna (Love 2007, xii; cf. Cousineau 2003), "Religion is like a cow. It kicks but it gives milk, too." Tran remarks that the saying can be manipulated for scholars of this field and explains that Religious education, in its fundamental tasks, is "intentional teaching" toward the chief aim of "bringing integration and integrity to life"--milk for the flourishing of individuals, communities, and planetary life. She further explains that RE also kicks--whether out of sheer muscular reflex or menacing premeditation. Tran grapples with the fact that no matter where one stands on the nature vs. nurture debate, it is hard to deny that violence in this world is relative, relational, contextual, situational, and--most intriguing for her as an educator--it is learned. She examines Religious education's entanglements in violence's daily production. As a religious educator she asks this pedagogic question: In contexts marked by violence, how might the ways in which violence is being "taught" and "learned" be traced through explicit, implicit, and null (Eisner 1985) cultural and religious pedagogies (with the implicit and null being arguably more lethal because they are unexposed)? She proposes her hunches toward a (re)new(ed) program for Religious Education that is earnest about the aims of integration and integrity so that we might set our hearts in a world that is violent.
