Never Too Young to Learn: Web Site Evaluation Is Elementary!

This article is based on a series of lessons prepared for a class of third graders who were going to research specific planets. With so many Web sites on the Internet, there is a need to be concerned about information overload for the audience. The NASA site (www.nasa.gov) is filled with lots of sites providing factual information about the different planetary systems. But is it readable and understandable by younger students? Do students this age have the first idea about what makes for a useful Web site versus one that provides confusing or inaccurate information? Do they understand how important it is to gather facts using valid Web sites and not depend upon the work of others, especially when the "others" are student peers much like themselves? In searching the Internet for this project, the author discovered many sites devoted to planet facts gathered and published by elementary students--often with unidentified resources. She also found mistakes. Here, the author shares how she finds lessons or presentations that are not too easy or complicated for the age group.
