The Cutting-Edge Challenge
Share, Joani
School Arts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v104 n5 p23 Jan 2005
In a time of educational budget cuts, the arts seem to take the major brunt of the financial ax. Fine arts programs are often pitted against one another for survival. The music industry and supporting corporations, such as American Express, campaign to have instruments donated or purchased to keep educational programs alive. The visual arts do not have such representation. In fact, the most prominent organizations championing their cause are those already directly involved in the visual arts arena, such as the National Art Education Association. This lack of support is detrimental to the future of visual arts programs, and to students involved in them. Visual arts students understand this problem and are ready to take action. The efforts of Joani Share's students at Arcadia High School in Phoenix, Arizona, resulted in the creation of a book of their work entitled The Cutting Edge. Each of the twenty-five students created a work of art, and selected and illustrated a quote from a famous artist, architect, philosopher, scientist, or global thinker. Each student also completed a paragraph or statement explaining the importance of art to him or her, or the impact art has in school. This article discusses the creation of this book.
