Molly Poland is a first year English and Home Economics teacher who began her career in a small Far North Queensland town. In this article, she writes about her first year teaching and the last year of her degree and the challenges she faced as both teacher and student. Reading Boomer's "Negotiating the Curriculum" forced her to think a little more closely about her teaching role as she began to ask herself if her teaching was interesting and engaging. Was the content relevant? Were students learning what was intended? Poland realized that in a world of Google, YouTube, and Smartphones, the need to negotiate the curriculum in the manner that Boomer suggested seems far less significant and, in some ways, redundant. Poland observes that this generation (and those to come) have a level of access to information like never before. She says that with so much information at their fingertips, and available immediately, this poses a problem for teachers looking to negotiate the curriculum to meet student interest and need. The article concludes with the author considering again the model of negotiating the curriculum as proposed by Boomer. She believes that in light of modern information availability, there is still a need to provide students with choice and ownership over their learning, and she believes it is her job to provide provocations and stimulus to challenge and extend what students will seek out on their own.
