The Economic Impact of Mohawk Valley Community College upon Oneida County.
Sotherden, Stephen; And Others
A comparison of the short-term economic costs of Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) to Oneida County (New York) with the short-term economic benefits to Oneida County for the 1977-78 MVCC fiscal year revealed that MVCC had an annual operating budget of approximately ten million dollars. Of this, 13.41% or $1,330,738 was contributed by the county; 39.78% came from state aid and 29.38% from student tuition. In contrast, the total MVCC-related Oneida County business volume came to $34,460,721. This includes direct college purchases from local business ($1,165,976), monies spent by the faculty-student association ($134,424), local health insurance payments ($179,990), student, staff, and visitor expenditures ($17,664,455), local business volume stimulated by individual spending related to MVCC ($11,486,907) and local purchases by local businesses in support of MVCC-related business ($3,828,969). Other areas investigated by this impact study were college-related local population, including both employees and students; impact on local employment and income; MVCC capital spending; MVCC costs and benefits to the Oneida County government; effects of MVCC's hypothetical non-existence in the county; and implications for the future. A major part of the study report is devoted to the methods used in data collection and in the economic analysis. (MB)
