"I Would Rather Be Size 10 Than Have Straight A's": A Focus Study Group of Adolescent Girls' Wish To Be Thinner.
Tiggemann, Marika; Gardiner, Maria; Slater, Amy
Journal of Adolescence, v23 n6 p645-59 Dec 2000
Investigates the body concerns of adolescent girls (N=67), together with the underlying motivations for wishes to be thinner. Results of focus group studies reveal that sociocultural influences exerted the strongest pressures to be thin. The girls displayed an unexpected sophistication in their conceptualization of the role of both media effects and body image in the construction of their self-image. (Contains 46 references.) (GCP)
