Prediction of State Mandated Assessment Mathematics Scores from Computer Based Mathematics and Reading Preview Assessments
Costa-Guerra, Boris
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, New Mexico State University
The study sought to understand whether MAPs computer based assessment of math and language skills using MAPs reading scores can predict student scores on the NMSBA. A key question was whether or not the prediction can be improved by including student language skill scores. The study explored the effectiveness of computer based preview assessments as predictors of the state mandated high stakes mathematic test scores. The role of language skills, as well as mathematics skills, were found to explain significant variance in the state math scores for a sample of 8th grade students in a Southwestern U.S. city, 30 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. Comparisons between Hispanic and Non-Hispanic students found differences in the contributions of language skills to the prediction of the state math assessment scores in all 5 math subscale areas. Implication to the future use of basic skills preview assessment is discussed. The study sought to understand whether MAPs computer based assessment of math and language skills using MAPs reading scores could predict student scores on the NMSBA.
