Long known as a college-football powerhouse, the University of Alabama (UA) is now considered a model for institutions seeking to maintain or boost their academic quality even as enrollments increase and budgets are squeezed. According to Carol Twigg, president of the National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT), which has been a significant force for change in higher education through promoting the use of technology to increase students' learning while reducing costs, the University of Alabama is one of their poster children. To date, NCAT has worked with dozens of institutions, including UA, to redesign introductory courses. The University of Alabama has been involved in all three of NCAT's redesign projects. In the first, it focused on Intermediate Algebra, then went on to redesign four other math classes on its own; in the second, it reworked its introductory Spanish courses and served as a resource for schools redesigning their math courses; and these days, as part of the third project, it continues to serve as a resource for other schools looking to duplicate its success in the math lab. Other schools that NCAT has worked with also have redesigned math or language courses. Indeed, NCAT has helped schools redesign a host of science, social-science and humanities courses. What makes UA stand out, Twigg said, is that it has not stopped with one or two courses but instead has gone on to incorporate technology into a wide variety of subjects throughout its undergraduate curriculum.
