To Kit or Not to Kit? Evaluating and Implementing Science Materials and Resources
Schiller, Ellen; Melin, Jacque; Bair, Mary
Science and Children, v53 n8 p61-66 Apr 2016
With the release of the "Next Generation Science Standards," many schools are reexamining the science materials they are using. Textbook companies and kit developers are eager to meet the demand for "NGSS"-aligned teaching materials. Teacher may have been asked to serve on a science curriculum committee, or to evaluate current materials, wondering if they are "NGSS" ready. How do teachers wade through the promises made by developers and ensure that the materials they use align with the standards--and truly lead to student learning and success? Having served as classroom teachers, science supervisors, and professional development grant directors, the authors have worked with many teachers who have begun to implement the new standards. They are changing their teaching to be in alignment with the "NGSS" and using the resources, tools, and materials used by real scientists. In this article, the authors share tools and strategies to aid in the science materials selection process and for evaluating materials after they have been adopted.
