Six papers presented by philosophy of education specialists are gathered in this volume. The first, "Implications in Dewey for Feminist Theory in Education" by Wilma R. Miranda, discusses the social thought of John Dewey and argues that domestic virtues are significant as modes of political action. In "Jim Teaches Fang to Sit," James F. Andris analyzes the logical conditions for teaching a dog a new trick and relates these to recent contributions to the philosophical analysis of teaching. Robert Newton Barger in "The Influence of J. L. Spalding's Educational Theory on His Theology" traces the development of J. L. Spalding's theological thought from about 1880 and how it influenced his education theory. The fourth paper, "Intermediate between Clicking and Ringing: The Jingle-Jangle Fallacies" by Walter P. Krolikowski, examines how a term coined by a philosopher-psychologist is adopted and adapted by four later scholars, each finding it of use just as long as it was somewhat changed. Michael C. Smith in "Karl Marx's Philosophy of Education: A Reconstruction of Marx's Ideas on Education" reconsiders the importance of Marx's work to current discussions in the philosophy of education. In the final paper, "Paul Goodman as a Twentieth Century Advocate of a Socratic Educational Philosophy," Ronald Swartz explores how Goodman's educational philosophy is relevant for 20th century schooling.
