Numerous and varied learning activities are provided in this instructor's manual for a course designed to help non-Indian social work students and social service providers expand their understanding of Indian culture with the purpose of achieving greater transcultural appreciation and, consequently, more effective social work practices appropriate to Indian communities. Study questions, learning activities, suggestions for teaching, and a brief bibliography of related readings are presented under five topical areas: Indian tribal diversity, parental roles and child rearing practices in the extended family, social work practice with Indian families, the federal-tribal relationship, and community resources for American Indians. Each section begins with a one-page overview including a statement of the major emphasis, a table of contents, and a list of desired outcomes and competencies. Learning activities range from preparing a Navajo meal, executing a traditional beadwork pattern, and learning simple American Indian dances to identifying Indian stereotypes, proposing hypothetical social and family problems and developing solutions, role playing, and evaluating policies and legislation affecting American Indians.
