This manual, the third in a series of publications that address community development possibilities in developing nations, provides guidelines for small-scale forestry projects that are integrative and conservation-oriented. Chapters focus on: (1) users and uses (specifying targeted audience and general objectives); (2) planning process (including a rationale and training directives); (3) forestry and the environment (defining ecology, succession, and limiting factors); (4) understanding forestry practices (discussing growth, protection, and harvesting procedures); (5) understanding institutional limitations (presenting legal, social, and economic considerations); (6) multiple-use forestry programs (analyzing implementation factors); (7) harvesting trees for wood products (itemizing types of products); (8) fuelwood management programs (stating the importance and impact of management); (9) agro-forestry projects (discussing benefits and problems); (10) shelterbelt and wind-break plantings (explaining structural and functional aspects; (11) reforestation and afforestation projects (outlining planning and planting procedures); and (12) other considerations (providing additional information). Miniguides for small scale community development projects are presented in the appendix. Seven pages of bigliographic references are also included and categorized by subject areas. (ML)
