The proceedings of the sixth regional workshop consist of a description of the project and the workshop; a description of the field survey, preparation, and field testing of materials by the group; five papers presented at the workshop; and notes on planned follow-up activities in the participating countries. The workshop culminated a project on the development of reading and reading-related materials for newly literate residents of developing countries in the Asian Pacific region. Prototype materials were developed by the Asian/Pacific joint Production Programme in previous workshops after extensive field surveys had been distributed and tested. This process is described in the proceedings. The papers presented at the workshop include: a report by a representative of Unesco, one of the participating organizations; a report from the Asian Cultural Centre for Unesco; the keynote address on the need for relevant, readable materials in developing nations; a report of progress in each participating country (Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Iran, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam); and a presentation about Malaysia's progress in three areas: eradication of illiteracy, universalization of primary education, and continuing education.
