This phenomenological research study examines the lived experience of individual adult transformation in the context of travel. Adults throughout history have experienced profound personal and perception changes as a result of significant travel events. Transformative learning occurs through experience, crisis, and reflection, all of which are components commonly associated with adult travel. Travelers can be categorized into five distinct types: (a) tourists, (b) adventurers, (c) pilgrims, (d) sojourners, and (e) vagabonds. Each traveler type manifests unique characteristics and differing tendencies regarding transformation dynamics. Historical and contemporary travel writing entries are examined and analyzed to identify themes that correspond with Mezirow's traditional transformation phases. Phenomenological research design is applied to express the lived experience of participants and to establish a baseline understanding of what transformation means to those who experience it in the context of travel situations and events. The lived experiences and lessons learned from those experiences benefit adult travelers, learners, and researchers, with potential significant implications to the adult education community at large.
