This series of 11 videotapes is intended to make the general public aware of what is happening in schools today and to encourage involvement and interest in the educational system. Topics of feature stories on each of the videos are as follows: (1) an African project in an Illinois school, a middle school in Madison, Wisconsin, the Indianapolis Zoo's efforts to link up with schools through e-mail, and the history of the physical setting of school life in the 1880s and today; (2) a World War II project in a Minnesota elementary school, an elementary school hyperstudio presentation based on a virtual vacation assignment, and Internet connections in a 5th grade inner-city classroom; (3) a multidisciplinary project on kayaking the Nile River, middle school students using the Internet to create functioning windmill models, and a student initiative to secure a grant that enabled a Michigan high school to connect to the Internet; (4) a first-grade teacher using developmentally appropriate practice, students using a variety of resources to respond to questions regarding landfills, and high school students maintaining one-on-one computer dialogues with scientists, designers, and engineers to complete class assignments; (5) a partnership between Evanston Township High School (Illinois) and Northwestern University, and the Iowa Communications Network for distance learning; (6) assessment strategies used in a 3/4 classroom, an elementary school classroom using "cognitively guided instruction" to achieve excellence in mathematics instruction, and a book club meshing technology, the Internet, and an after-school reading program; (7) three individuals who overcame the odds to succeed in the world, and a 3-year high school science class that is team taught; (8) Schaumburg, Illinois school district's struggles to plan for the implementation of technology in the curriculum, and Bloomington, Illinois students studying history with the help of technology; (9) a Portland, Oregon classroom using the Internet to follow Linda Finch's flight that retraced Amelia Earhart's original flight plan around the world, and an innovative Web site that helps in school improvement; (10) an adult education class in Corvallis, Oregon, where technology plays a major role, and a multidisciplinary project in Addison, Illinois to beautify school grounds while learning about science, art, math, social studies, and the environment; and (11) adult learners in Grays Lake, Illinois using the Internet to teach others about their home countries, and the Reading Recovery project and how it has fostered collaboration between schools and universities.
