Parent, Student, and Teacher Perceptions of Student-Led Conferences and Strategies to Host Effective Student-Led Conferences

This is a mixed-methods case study designed to examine the perceptions parents, students and teachers have about student-led conferences with the purpose of informing practices at the researcher's school as well as sharing strategies used to host effective student-led conferences. Parents and students were interviewed and surveyed. Teachers were interviewed and literature was reviewed. Synthesis of the data resulted in a better understanding of both the positive and negative perceptions these three groups had about student-led conferences. Parents were comfortable with the conferences; they liked that their children were able to use the life skills of responsibility, reflection, and goal-setting, and they appreciated the children's ability to be leaders and present information. Parents did not like the possibility of discussing difficult topics in front of the children and strongly preferred the option of private time with the teacher. Students shared a high level of respect for their teacher, and they enjoyed directing the student-led conferences, goal setting and sharing information with their parents. Students felt fearful about the stress and pressure to perform, even though they acknowledged a large amount of teacher support. Teachers saw value in having the students examine their work, reflecting on that work, setting goals and having the authentic experience of communicating information during a formal presentation. Teachers were concerned about the amount of time and work required to plan and prepare for student-led conferences. The findings will have implications for those who are interested in beginning or improving the practice of student-led conferences. Future research may include a national study involving elementary schools that have implemented student-led conferences for multiple years.
