The Transformation of Political Culture in Cuba.
Fagen, Richard R.
Cuba has experienced drastic social, economic, and political change since 1959. This book examines and analyses three important programs of Castro's regime which incorporate some of the distinctive features of the entire Cuban experience political socialization and cultural change; the literacy campaign of 1961, which was perhaps the most successful and important of the regime's mobilization efforts; the Schools Revolutionary Instruction--for some year Cuba's leading means of political education; and the Committees for Defense of the Revolution--Cuba's far reaching mass organization. Initial and concluding chapters discuss in more general terms the style and consequences of radical effort to transform Cuban society by creating a new kind of Cuban citizen. In appendixes the author presents lengthy translated portions of Castro's speeches. Another appendix reports on experiments in political socialization and culture change in three areas of rural Cuba visited between 1966 and 1968. (PT)
