A Fragile Rock
Blackwood, Kendrick
Teacher Magazine, v17 n5 p30-33 Mar 2006
In this article, the author profiles Norma Jean Taylor, a teacher who is suffering from an incurable degenerative disease. She can no longer walk, or even write legibly. But with help from students and colleagues, she remains a cornerstone of her school. The disease has not yet taken her love of teaching, though it has forced her to radically alter her approach. Fiercely independent by nature, she is slowly accepting more student assistance, such as writing on the whiteboard, and working on her computer. According to her, she has learned to ask for help which is good. Not everyone is so accommodating. Some students try to take advantage of her disease and blame her disability for instructions they do not understand. In spite of this, she still has support from several students and colleagues.
