Ethical Leadership and Decision Making in Education: Applying Theoretical Perspectives to Complex Dilemmas. Topics in Educational Leadership.
Shapiro, Joan Poliner; Stefkovich, Jacqueline A.
This book discusses how students and practitioners should take into account four ethics paradigms to help solve authentic dilemmas. These paradigms are the ethic of justice, ethic of care, ethic of critique, and ethic of the profession. The book's purposes include demonstrating the application of these different paradigms through the discussion and analysis of real-life moral dilemmas; addressing some of the practical, pedagogical, and curricular issues related to the teaching of ethics for educational leaders; and emphasizing the importance of ethics instruction from a variety of theoretical approaches. It also provides a process that instructors might follow to develop their own ethics course. Part 1 provides an overview of why ethics is so important, especially for today's leaders, and describes a multiparadigm approach essential to practitioners as they grapple with ethical dilemmas. Part 2 deals with the dilemmas themselves and how the multiparadigm approach may be applied. Part 3 focuses on pedagogy. In the teaching of ethics, both students and instructors are strong encouraged to reflect their own personal values and beliefs. This book is designed for a wide range of audience, and as a basic or supplementary text for a variety of university courses in education. (Contains 124 references.) (RT)
