The Present State of Scholarship in Historical and Contemporary Rhetoric. Revised Edition.
Horner, Winifred Bryan, Ed.
Designed for the student of historical rhetoric who does not have a reading knowledge of Greek and Latin, this book (a revised edition of a volume first published in 1983) is divided into six chronological sections, each written by a specialist in the rhetoric of a different historical period. Each section: (1) provides an overview of the primary works, their authors, and the rhetorical issues of the period; (2) suggests needs for editions and translations, as well as directions for future scholarship; and (3) concludes with a bibliography. The book's contributors are Richard Leo Enos and Ann M. Blakeslee (the classical period); James J. Murphy and Martin Camargo (the Middle Ages); Don Paul Abbott (the Renaissance); Winifred Bryan Horner and Kerri Morris Barton (the eighteenth century); Donald C. Stewart (the nineteenth century); and James L. Kinneavy (contemporary rhetoric). (MG)
