When President Obama maps out his plans for his next four years as the nation's chief executive, presidents in higher education are hoping he keeps his commitment to support and boost federal support for their institutions. When recently asked to identify three issues in higher education they felt were most important for the president to address in his next term, the presidents acknowledged that fiscal times are increasingly tough at the federal and state levels. Tough spending choices are being made at the highest levels of government, as well as on their campuses, they note. By the same token, the presidents point out the need to save federal support for higher education in the process of belt tightening, citing education as the key to driving an economy. For sure, as new historically black colleges and universities(HBCU) presidents step on the scene between this year and next to join many seasoned administrators, there is a sense that Obama's agenda will greatly impact what kind of challenges their respective institutions will face to survive and grow in the rapidly changing world of higher education.
