Me & Isaac Newton. [Videotape and] KIDSNET Guide for Educators.
This videotape records the stories of 7 scientists, 3 women and 4 men who range in age from 33 to 81. Beginning with their earliest scientific questions and including their most personal ponderings, the scientists reveal their histories and professional obligations to affect the world. Director Michael Apted allows the personal adventures of the scientists to become accessible and intriguing to the viewer, while unearthing the scientists' motivations. The film also explores the more challenging aspects of a life in science, including the years of research and the failed experiments along the way. In describing their attitudes toward this part of the process, the scientists demonstrate the faith and patience required to persevere in a field geared toward leaps in knowldege based on small, intermediate steps in understanding. Beyond the individual pursuits of each scientist lies a broader perspective of the role science plays in society. Apted captures the ruminations of his subjects on the responsiblities that come with knowledge and technology, the relationship of the scientist to the world, and ultimately, the relationship of science to the future. The educators guide which accompanies the videotape provides information on how to use the film, questions that need to be asked, student activities, and discussions with scientists who were interviewed in the film. The national and state curriculum standards addressed in the activities are listed by subject area. (YDS)
