Bush Blitz Teachlive 2016
Teaching Science, v62 n2 p8-10 Jun 2016
This article reports on an event that took place in February 2016, where five teachers (Jade Tinney, Louise Hoey, Mary-Anne Kefaloukos, Nicole Sadler, and Bruce Mills) from across Australia headed off into the chilly wilderness of South Bruny National Park, on Bruny Island, Tasmania, to participate in the "Bush Blitz TeachLive 2016" program. The "TeachLive" aspect of the program gave teachers the opportunity to work as research assistants for the scientists for a week. The scientists taught them interesting and eye-opening things, from an infinite number of scientific names, how to catch invertebrates using traps, nets and pooters, to studying their features to tell them apart. During that time, the teachers also held live Skype sessions with their classes back home and wrote interactive daily blogs on the "Bush Blitz TeachLive" website (bushblitz.teachlive. org.au), providing their students with an immediate experience of what their teachers were doing. Each teacher has taken their excitement and enthusiasm from these adventures back to their students, building on the online interactions during the "Bush Blitz" week.
