"Dear Ann ..." An Activity for Synthesizing and Applying Interpersonal Concepts
Brule, Nancy J.
Communication Teacher, v21 n4 p108-111 Oct 2007
All students struggle with interpersonal based problems, be it a troublesome roommate, problems with a partner, conflict with a significant other, or relational issues with parents or children. The interpersonal communication classroom can be enhanced by discussing these problems and experiences. This article presents an activity that aims to (1) synthesize interpersonal theories and concepts learned throughout the semester and to (2) apply them to real life situations. The "Ann Landers" activity allows students the opportunity to share a problem they or someone they care about is experiencing, have the problems identified in a theoretical and objective perspective, and receive and offer solutions based on communication theories and concepts. The author has developed this activity for use in Interpersonal Communication.
