Harmonization of Education and Training Programmes for Library, Information and Archival Personnel.
Bowden, Russell
This state-of-the-art report presents the current IFLA position on library education and training and describes some of the experiences that occurred from 1980 to 1987 on which this position is based. These are: (1) IFLA-Unesco (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) pre-conference seminars held in Manila (1980), Montreal (1982), and Nairobi (1984); (2) tri-partite meetings of the FID (Federation Internationale de Documentation), ICA (International Council for Archives), and IFLA which examined the common teaching of management (Vienna, 1983, Varna, Bulgaria, 1985, and Vienna, 1986); (3) an advanced workshop organized by the European Cultural Foundation in Luxembourg (1984) to assess the impact of new information technology on library management, resources, and cooperation in Europe and North America; (4) a Unesco organized conference which produced an action plan (complete copy included) in Paris (1984); (5) guidelines produced by the British Library Association for harmonizing qualifications within Commission countries (1985); and (6) the production of a list of documents relevant to education for archivists which was produced by the RAMP project of Unesco in Paris (1986). Nine appendixes include main recommendations, resolutions, manifestos, and reports that emerged from the above mentioned seminars and meetings. (CGD)
