Likert response scales are widely used in the social sciences, typically to measure attitudes and personality. This study seeks to understand the optimal number of categories to include in a Likert scale measuring attitudes. Therefore, the author examined four versions of an attitude measure, the Religious Motivation Scale, ranging from a 4- to 7-point response set with 50 people for each version. The author found that although odd-numbered response categories showed greater internal consistency reliability than even-numbered response categories, these differences were not statistically significant. Additionally, the author concluded that the 4- and 5-point response formats took significantly less time to complete than the 6- and 7-point response formats. Lastly, the author correlated four other religious variables with the four existing scales of the questionnaire. Contrary to his expectations, he did not find an increase in correlation between the four other religious variables and a greater number of response points. Rather, he found the strongest correlations between the 5-point and 6-point scales and the other religious variables. Based upon the results, the author recommends the use of a 5-point questionnaire for attitude scales such as the Religious Motivation Scale.
