Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences (1993) identifies several ways of "learning and knowing." Among these are the logical/mathematical and linguistic intelligence--the two most validated by society and on which all standardized tests are based. Therefore, physical education specialist are facing more pressure than ever to advocate for their subject. The bodily/kinesthetic intelligence, to which PE professionals are most closely aligned, is probably the least valued of the intelligences, because it is based on the principle that individuals can learn and know with their bodies and body parts. The functions of the mind have long been considered more important than the functions of the body. This article looks specifically at existing connections among physical education, emergent literacy, and mathematics rather than promote physical activity's general role in learning. It also explores further connections that PE teachers can make, while still helping young children to become physically educated.
