Law: The Language of Liberty. Supplemental Materials for Alabama Social Studies Teachers. Grades 5-6.
Alabama Administrative Office of Courts, Montgomery.
Student activity pages, teacher background information, and lesson ideas for teaching about the law in social studies classrooms are provided in this supplementary packet. An introductory section provides a rationale for the unit, a guide to bringing law-related resource persons into the classroom, a teacher checklist for helping resource persons plan classroom visits, and a list of items to consider when planning field trips. Separate sections focus on the distinction between law and custom, legal responsibility, the historical development of law, freedom and justice, criminal law, courtroom procedures, and the laws and customs of other cultures. Each lesson includes an objective, step-by-step procedures, and reproducible student handouts. Activities include analyzing tables for content related to freedom and justice; tracing the history of laws; analyzing case studies of various criminal offenses (e.g., petty larceny, truancy, vandalism, breaking and entering, and assault and battery); role-playing court procedures; and reading about the laws and customs of the Eskimo, various Canadian tribes, the Iroquois, the Aztec, the Inca, and Canadian and Mexican governments. A chart comparing the governments of the United States, Mexico, and Canada concludes the final chapter. (LH)
