The history of university education in Nigeria is examined, beginning with the implementation of the Lord Eric Ashby Commission's report in 1962, which started the march towards general access to university education. Following an introduction by Idris Abdulkadir, the following papers are presented: "The Nigerian University as a Trustee of Society" (Tai Solarin); "The Emergence of State and Private Universities" (O. Oladapo); "International Co-operation in University Development" (The Delegate, European Economic Community, Nigeria Office); "Research and Its Application in Nigeria" (E. U. Emovon); "Reminiscences of the Establishment of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka" (C. Ikoku); "Student Unionism on Nigerian Universities Campuses: A Curse OR Blessing?" (Segun Okeowo); "The Politics of Administering a Nigerian University" (C. Alele-Williams); "The Financial Constraints Hindering Successful Administration of a Nigerian University" (M. Mbajiorgu); and "Historical Evolution of the National Universities Commission (The Secretariat and the Board) 1962-1988" (C. Ajayi). Contributions from the National Universities Commission Secretariat describe the functions and activities of the Administration Division, Finance Division, Academic Planning Division, Physical Planning Division, and Research and Postgraduate Development Division of the Commission. Also provided is a list of the members of the National Universities Commission from its inception through the 1980s. (JDD)
