The International Student Office at the University of Akron: From People Processing to People Changing.
Dalili, Farid
The services provided by The University of Akron's International Student Office (ISO) are described, along with additional programming needs. The ISO provides immigration counseling, academic advising, orientation programs, and the English Language Institute. Information and referral services for foreign students and information on study/travel abroad for American students are also provided. The responsibilities of the international student advisor are identified, along with the results of an evaluation of the ISO services. It was found that the advisor's time is focused on administrative tasks and responding to information requests. It is suggested that in order for the ISO to more effectively help foreign students adapt to the university and American culture it should focus on their problems, which include language difficulties and unfamiliarity with social customs and U.S. educational practices. Detailed data are presented on the college's foreign students by country of origin, sex, educational level, and major. It is recommended that a formal policy be developed for foreign student education at the university and that more resources be allocated to the ISO for facilities and staffing. A proposed ISO organizational chart is presented. (SW)
