Teaching Study Skills. A Guide for Teachers. Second Edition.
Devine, Thomas G.
This book describes specific ways for teachers to assist their students in mastering skills needed for success in school. It is based upon the belief that thinking can be improved, human intellect sharpened, and academic ability increased. A case for study skills is made in Chapter I. Chapter II provides guidelines for the immediate improvement of classroom listening, describes important research findings in listening upon which teaching needs to be based, and concludes with descriptions of successful lessons at elementary, secondary, and post-secondary levels. Chapter III highlights specific techniques for textbook reading and suggests ways for improving textbook use in general. The three content areas of mathematics, science, and literature are addressed in chapter IV. The fifth chapter considers study skills and thinking processes, while the sixth chapter addresses study skills and vocabulary development. Chapter VII describes notetaking, homework, and study guides. The eighth chapter discusses the use of research skills. Chapters IX and X address study skills in comprehension and reporting. The eleventh chapter considers the concepts of remembering, relating, and test-taking. Chapter XII discusses motivation, self-concept, and the study skills program. (CB)
