The Dynamic Role of Symbols in Human Meaning Making
Tracy, Rita
Mind, Culture, and Activity, v19 n4 p376-378 2012
The author reviews "Symbolic Transformation: The Mind in Movement Through Culture and Society," an important first book in a new series that aimed at understanding the myriad ways "social representation processes operate in one's everyday feeling, thinking and acting." The book consists of a series of chapters brought together to develop a rich understanding of symbols--both their function in human interactions and the essential role they play in how humans understand our world. Taken together, these chapters embolden the claim Wagoner makes in the introduction, namely, that the human mind is embedded in culture and society and that symbols are the intermediary connecting the two. For the purposes of this review, the author provides an overview of the organization of the book, its conceptual orientation, and how the chapters work together to build a cohesive argument regarding the importance of symbolic processes in people's daily lives.
