Case Study: The Hunger Pains--Ghrelin, Weight Loss, and Maintenance
Diener, Lynn M.
Journal of College Science Teaching, v43 n1 p64-67 Sep 2013
This article presents a case study regarding healthy weight loss and the role of the hormone ghrelin in maintaining a lower body weight. This study was designed specifically for use in an introductory college-level physiology course. It addresses the use of the case study in teaching digestion and metabolism, exploring the role of hormones in bodily function, and encouraging students towards inquiry. Specifically, the goals of the case study are: (1) to understand what a hormone is and what hormones do, with a specific focus on ghrelin and growth hormone; (2) to understand catabolism and anabolism; (3) to explore the effect of sleep and diet on ghrelin; (4) to make and interpret graphs; and (5) to critically assess a research study.
