This conference proceedings document contains 18 papers focusing on ideas and strategies for effective literacy instruction. Following opening remarks by Rita M. Bean, are four keynote addresses: "Toward Uncommon Sense Literacy Learning; Integrating Reading and Writing" (John Mayher); "Literacy Learning in At-Risk First Graders" (Diane DeFord); "Developing Motivated Readers: What Schools and Parents Can Do" (Dixie Lee Spiegel); and "Alternatives to the Regular Education Initiative" (James Kauffman). Ridge); "Developing Intertextual Comprehension: Students Reading Multiple Texts" (Douglas Hartman); "Using a Process Approach in Remedial Reading Instruction" (Rebecca Hamilton and others); "Risk Factors in Early Reading" (Danielle Zinna); "Literacy Development: An African American Perspective" (Shirley A. Biggs); "Fostering Emerging Oral and Written Language through Projects" (Jeanette Allison Hartman); "Cutting Edge Strategies for Tutors of Adult Learners" (Beverly Ohemeng); and "A Review of 'Perspectives: From Adult Literacy to Continuing Education'" (Alice Scales).
