This report provides a compilation of indicators of school readiness used in national, state, and local surveys in the United States, delineating the advantages and disadvantages for each indicator. The report begins with a legend to assist in interpreting the tables and includes contact information for national and state surveys. The remainder of the report, then presents the indicator areas, in a tabular format, and includes questions from each national and state survey, source and item number, and advantages and disadvantages. Indicator areas include: (1) physical well-being and motor development; (2) social and emotional development; (3) language development; (4) cognitive development; and (5) disposition to learn. Also included are indicators for three contributing conditions: healthy physical development, supportive social and cognitive environments, and safe physical environments. Tables for local surveys contain the same information as national/state tables but identify advantages and disadvantages applying to all items. The report includes indicators from four of the survey's part of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, four from the Family and Child Experiences Survey, and four from the National Household Education Survey Parent Interview. Indicators are included from the state surveys of Delaware, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Vermont. Local survey indicators are taken from the Hope VI Resident Satisfaction Survey, the Hope VI Windshield Survey, the Inventory of Socially Supportive Behaviors, the Kids Count City Trends survey, the Neighboring in an Urban Environment survey, the National Outcome Work Groups survey, the Social Support Behaviors Scale, the Sustainable Measures Indicators Database, and the Zero Population Growth Kid Friendly Cities Report Card.
