This Kids Count report is the ninth to examine annually statewide trends in the well-being of Washington's children. The statistical portrait is based on indicators of child well-being in five areas: (1) family and community, including teen birth rate, teen pregnancy rate, divorces involving children, and births to unmarried mothers; (2) economic well-being, including average real wages, per capita income, and annual childcare cost; (3) health, including low birth weight rate, percentage of 2-year-olds immunized, and suicide mortality; (4) education (reading and mathematics achievement, racial achievement gap); and (5) safety and security, including child abuse referrals, homicide mortality rates, juvenile arrest rates for violent crime, firearms mortality rates, and motor vehicle accident mortality. Following a summary of recent statewide trends in children's well-being, part 2 of the report discusses improving the emotional and behavioral well-being of children as the next challenge for the state. Part 3 presents findings for key indicators in each of the 5 areas. Among the highlights are the following: Teen pregnancy and birth rates continue to decline, although births to unmarried women still approximate 30 percent of births. Economic inequalities continue to grow, with education, family structure, access to capital and area of residence playing key roles in income distribution. Binge drinking and marijuana use by high schoolers has declined. Children of color lag behind white students in both reading and mathematics achievement. Injuries continue to be the major cause of death among children. The report concludes with information on data sources and information on Washington Kids Count. (KB)
