"Does AIDS Hurt?": Educating Young Children about AIDS. Suggestions for Parents, Teachers, and Other Care Providers of Children to Age 10.

This document gives parents, teachers, and others basic information and suggested guidelines for teaching children aged 10 and younger about Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). These topics concerning AIDS and young children are discussed: (1) talking with young children about AIDS; (2) things to keep in mind when talking with children, including the relationship with the child and the child's age and developmental level; (3) appropriate times to bring up the topic of AIDS; (4) questions children may ask about AIDS and how to answer them; (5) guidelines to keep in mind when talking to children when a child, family, or friends are at risk or are infected with the AIDS virus; (6) issues for the young child in foster care; (7) AIDS education in the early elementary classroom; (8) anticipating problems that might come up in discussing AIDS with young children; and (9) guidelines for the school with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected students or staff, including informing teachers, parents, students, and the community at large. Descriptive information about AIDS is provided, including epidemiology, symptoms of infection, and prevention and testing. Advice is given on how to stay updated on AIDS information. AIDS information appropriate for infants, toddlers, early childhood, and school-aged children is given. Physical and behavioral/attitudinal signs of sexual abuse are listed. Further resources of AIDS are listed, including written materials and organizations. (ABL)
