Criteria for Evaluating an AIDS Curriculum. Third Edition.
National Coalition of Advocates for Students, Boston, MA.
This booklet presents a set of criteria that can be used to evaluate and compare curricula for the teaching of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The criteria are arranged in a checklist covering curriculum content and curriculum development/implementation. The booklet discusses developmental characteristics of students at different grade levels and appropriate approaches to HIV education in those grades, from kindergarten through grade 12. Information that should be communicated to all adolescents is provided. A staff training program and strategies for parent and community involvement are also outlined. The booklet recommends that HIV and AIDS instruction take place within a comprehensive health education program that establishes a foundation for understanding the relationship between health and behavior.
