The Social Media Evolution: Online Tools Drive Opportunities for Alumni Outreach, Fundraising
Halligan, Tom
Community College Journal, v80 n4 p30-33 Feb-Mar 2010
Keeping up with alumni has always been tough for community colleges. It's not unusual for students to transfer to other institutions and leave the area, or to attend school briefly only to be swallowed up again by the workforce. Fortunately, a new breed of social media is making alumni outreach easier. And colleges are taking advantage. This article discusses how Camden County College (CCC), one of the largest community colleges in New Jersey, uses Web sites, e-mail, e-newsletters, and social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to engage alumni and keep them involved in the college community. CCC is not the only college making inroads on the social media landscape. Heartland Community College (HCC) in Normal, Illinois, has managed, despite a tough budget climate, to take small steps in this direction. Similar outreach efforts are under way in California, one of the states hardest hit by the recent budget crunch.
