Writing to Learn in Social Studies
Boyer, Tara L.
Social Studies, v97 n4 p158-160 Jul-Aug 2006
One of the best ways to enrich students' social studies experience is to include assignments in which students interact with social studies content and skills. In this article, the author explains how teachers can use writing exercises to encourage such interaction. She describes the following writing activities: (1) acrostics; (2) haiku; (3) holiday cards "from" historical figures; (4) a soldier's handbook; (5) a dialogue journal; (6) diaries written using the persona of an immigrant; (7) eulogies; and (8) brochures.
