Factors that Influence Career Choice among Native American and African American High School Students
Bennett-Smith, Keisha K.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
There is a need for research in the area of career choice of minority students in the United States. This descriptive study examined the factors that may influence Native American and African American high school students' career choices. These factors include such variables as parental educational level, family composition, and potential grade point average. The students were randomly sampled from 2 different schools in the southeastern region of North Carolina, ranging in age from 15 to 18 and from grades 10 through 12. Each of the students was given the Career Factors Inventory (CFI; "Career Factors Inventory: Applications and Technical Guide," J. M. Chartrand, S. B. Robbins, & W. H. Morrill, 1997) to obtain a more in-depth understanding of the students' readiness to make career-related decisions. The CFI addresses 2 information factors, Need for Career Information and Self-Knowledge, and 2 personal-emotional factors, Career Choice Anxiety and Generalized Indecisiveness. In addition, each student responded to 1 open-ended question assessing why the topic of career choice should be studied in school. Students were provided with a general information sheet that asked questions related to the study variables parental educational level, family composition, and retention/grade point average. Research in the study was based on SCCT and additional factors that attempted to assess various issues related to the variables presented in the study.
