While group counseling has the potential to be an effective form of intervention in sub-Saharan Africa, research on group processes that would help guide group interventions in the region is scarce. This study investigated therapeutic factors and group climate in experiential training groups in Botswana. The Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ; Bloch, Reibstein, Crouch, Holroyd, & Themen, 1979) and the Group Climate Questionnaire-Short (GCQ-S; MacKenzie, 1983) were collected from participants during three sessions of training groups in a group dynamics course. CIQ results indicated that group members prefer Cognitive Insight-oriented groups (Kivlighan & Holmes, 2004). The factor structure of the GCQ-S was not a good fit with this population, suggesting that cultural differences influence group climate variables. (Contains 4 tables.)
