Remodelling of a Lycee in Grenoble. Programme on Educational Building 14.
Roche, G.
The 1973 remodeling of the Emmanuel Mounier Lycee in Grenoble, France, shows how a secondary educational facility can respond to expanding school offerings. As background to the lycee's expansion, the author, who was principal of the school during its remodeling, provides general information on the French educational system and on the consequent design and use of school buildings in France. The general information includes an overview of educational tracks in elementary and secondary schools, an analysis of the age and use of floor space in common school buildings, and the rationale behind the program of remodeling facilities. The second part of the report focuses on educational facilities and needs in Grenoble and describes the city's schools with their present educational tracks. The schools are examined to point out how they fell short in satisfying the national emphasis on more comprehensive schools covering more areas of the full curriculum. The author finally focuses on his school's experiment in emphasizing pupils' independent work and in remodeling its facilities to fit the emphasis on independence in the curriculum. (JW)
