The SACNAS Biography Project: A Resource for K-12 Educators. [CD-ROM].
Alabama State Dept. of Education, Montgomery.
This CD-ROM was designed as a resource for K-12 educators who are interested in teaching their students about the accomplishments of Chicano/Latino and Native American scientists. Profiles of 48 Latino and Native American scientists, mathematicians, and engineers have been written at the middle school and high school levels and are searchable in the following ways: by scientist's last name, by scientific subject/discipline, by grade level, by ethnicity, and by women scientists. Each profile typically contains the professional's family background, educational experiences, professional accomplishments, and advice to students. The CD-ROM also contains: (1) a video of the project director Dr. William Velez discussing his work, his passionate interest in mathematics, and his values as a professor; (2) a searchable glossary; (3) Web sites highlighting the life stories of minority and women scientists; (4) Web sites for K-12 educators, focusing on science and mathematics, minority students, professional development, and financial aid for educators and students; and (5) information on the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), including its K-12 education programs, teacher workshops, teacher-scientist partnerships, and the SACNAS Distinguished K-12 Educator Award.
